Internet Service Providers

Finding a reliable Internet Service Provider is a challenge everybody will face in Indonesia. The best advice that can be offered is to forget about the kind of service you can get “back home,” and just accept that you are never going to get the same speed, reliability or value for money.

While ISPs in Indonesia are steadily improving, it is still a challenge for both businesses and individuals to find a service that meets their needs and budgets. Service reliablity can vary widely from place to place, even within the Jakarta area, so a good ISP in one area may not be so good in another.

Below are listed just a few of the better ISP services available.

Fastnet

http://www.firstmedia.com/

This is likely the fastest, most reliable and best-value-for-money services available at this time. Unfortunately, their service is limited to home use only, but plans are in the pipeline to create a service for business users. The only thing that lets this company down is its customer service center. People with high blood pressure should avoid talking to Fastnet/First Media Customer Service folks.

Product                        Quota                           Speed                          Price

·         FastNet 512                  Unlimited                       512 kbps                        Rp 195,000

·         FastNet 768                  Unlimited                       768 kbps                        Rp 295,000

·         FastNet 1500                 Unlimited                       1,500 kbps                      Rp 595,000

·         FastNet 3000                 Unlimited                       3,000 kbps                      Rp 1,195,000

Biznet

With a Fiber-optic network, Biznet claims to be one of the more reliable ISPs available. The customer service is responsive, but the service is limited to mostly Java and Bali. Not a bad service, but they are certainly one of the more expensive options available.

Indosat 3.5G

http://www.indosatm2.com/

For those people who want to access the Internet from anywhere, the 3.5G offering from Indosat is not a bad way to go. Indosat also offer a wide range of other Internet services including CDMA, Cable and Dial-up. However, I would only consider using them for their 3.5G services.

BANDLUXE Modem

(open provider)

A recent addition to the choices available in Jakarta is an amazing device that can be purchased in any IT mall. The Bandluxe C120 HSDPA USB Modem is a true winner, allowing some of the fastest connection speeds available in Indonesia. At 7.2 Mbps, it is an essential addition to any business traveler's luggage. The modem will set you back Rp 1,800,000 and then all you do is slot it into any GPRS Roaming enabled SIM card. The charges will depend on which of the telcoms operators you are using.

www.glodokshop.com will deliver and have an English speaking sales line. Could be handy for those people who want to find a product online instead of going around endless shopping malls.
