Indonesian Acronyms, Abbreviations, Portmanteaus and Contractions    

Some of these are a bit dated and not used so much. Conversely, there are new ones cropping up all the time. Unlike in the West, many of these are used in a first reference in the mass media without any explanation - as most people just "know" them or are expected to.

AND... most dictionaries don't tell you what these are. Some of these are so commonly used in everyday conversation many locals have forgotten precisely what the acronym spells out, but they'll know the meaning. For example, every Indonesian clearly understands what 'SARA' means. (But ask them to tell you what it spells out. They will all be able to describe to you that it means it's really bad to debate serious issues about minority religions or minority groups, and they'll get to 'Suku' [ethnicity], 'Agama' [religion], then ... er... um... wait... 'apa sih?'...)

Newbie: Wow, where did you learn to do that?
Indonesian friend: I learned that at "ookey" (meaning he/she went to Universitas Kristen Indonesia, or UKI).

Bottom line, if you want to be effective in communicating with Indonesians, (or even reading local newspapers), you need to know these.
