Batam's international schools have multiplied. Sekolah Global Indo-Asia in Batam Centre is the island's only IB World School, teaching in English with Bahasa Indonesia and Mandarin support. The Independent School Batam, at Rosedale, follows the British Cambridge curriculum to IGCSE.

At least eight international and private schools now operate here. Annual fees run from roughly IDR 27 million to about IDR 100 million for senior secondary, plus admission and facilities charges.

Health care has improved sharply. RS Awal Bros Batam, opened in 2003, is a 214-bed hospital with JCI and KARS accreditation and dedicated Heart and Stroke centres; the group now runs three hospitals on the island, backed by other public and private hospitals.

Specialist care is no longer scarce, and Batam is being built into a medical-tourism hub, with a new international hospital due around 2027. Singapore remains a short ferry away for complex cases, while Melaka means a ferry to Johor Bahru then road, not a direct boat. Crossing the strait is now a choice, not a necessity.
