Sexiest Legislative Candidates
Is it an election or a beauty pageant? Political parties used to hire sexy singers and actresses to enliven otherwise boring campaign rallies, which people were paid to attend. This year, many parties have recruited celebrities to run for office. Here are some of the legislative candidates getting attention for their looks. Not all of them are just pretty faces.
Destiya Purna Panca (Destiara Talita alias Tata)
Party: Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI)
Constituency: West Java District VIII (Indramayu and Cirebon regencies, Cirebon city).
Born: 23 December 1988 (25 on election day).
Occupation: Model. Finalist in Babes From Net, Season 2 (2013). Appeared in Popular and FHM magazines. Tweeted that she dislikes TV soap operas, infotainment and gossip shows, and instead prefers news about social issues and corruption.
Result: 203 votes (of 2,218,567 votes cast). Not elected.
Camelia Panduwinata Lubis (Camel Petir)
Party: Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI)
Constituency: Jakarta II (North Jakarta and Thousand Islands).
Born: 27 October 1985 (28 on election day).
Occupation: Dangdut singer. Owns a beauty salon, cafe and boutique. Has a degree in accounting from Al Azhar University in Medan, North Sumatra.
Result: 612 votes (of 2,002,301 votes cast). Not elected.
Angel Lelga Anggreyani
Party: United Development Party (PPP).
Constituency: Central Java’s District V (Boyolali, Klaten and Sukoharjo regencies, Surakarta city).
Born: 1 January 1984 (30 on election day).
Occupation: Actress and singer. Ex-wife of dangdut music 'King' Rhoma Irama, who is a presidential candidate for the National Awakening Party (PKB).
Result: 18,004 votes (of 2,226,910 votes cast). Most votes of any PPP candidate in the constituency, but not enough to beat candidates of six other parties. Not elected.
Rachel Maryam
Party: Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra)
Constituency: West Java District II (Bandung and West Bandung regencies). Served in the DPR for Gerindra for 2009-2014. Seeking re-election.
Born: 20 April 1980 (33 on election day).
Occupation: Actress and model. Was one of several models filmed by a hidden camera while getting undressed at the studio of Jakarta fashion photographer Budi Han in 1997. The nude footage ended up on DVDs and online. The exposure gave her career a boost.
Result: 58,578 votes (of 2,686,258 votes cast). Elected.
Venna Melinda
Party: Democratic Party
Constituency: East Java District VI (Blitar and Kediri cities, Tulungagung regency). Served in the DPR for the Democrats over 2009-2014. Seeking re-election.
Born: 20 July 1972 (41 on election day).
Occupation: Former Miss Indonesia (1994) and soap opera actress. Also appeared in health, fitness and dance DVDs. Has written a book on wellbeing.
Result: 49,383 votes (of 2,502,827 votes cast). Elected.
Arzetty Bilbina
Party: National Awakening Party (PKB)
Constituency: East Java's District I (Surabaya city and Sidoarjo regency).
Born: 4 September 1976 (37 on election day).
Occupation: Model, actress and reality show presenter.
Result: 48,306 votes (of 2,271,635 votes cast). Two other PKB candidates for the constituency received more votes. Not elected.
Ingrid Maria Palupi Kansil
Party: Democratic Party (Democrat)
Constituency: West Java District IV (Sukabumi city and regency). Served in the DPR for the Democrats for 2009-2014. Seeking re-election.
Born: 9 November 1976 (37 on election day).
Occupation: Former TV commercial star and soap opera actress. Wife of Cooperatives Minister Syarief Hasan, who is 27 years her senior. Made the tabloid headlines in 2013, strongly denying rumors she had an affair with her stepson.
Result: 30,772 votes (of 1,432,599 votes cast). The most votes of any Democratic Party candidate for the constituency, but not enough to beat candidates of five other parties. Not elected.
Melinda Susilarini (Mel Shandy)
Party: National Democratic Party (NasDem)
Constituency: West Java District II (Bandung and West Bandung regencies).
Born: 26 September 1971 (42 on election day).
Occupation: Rock singer with several hits in the 1980s and 90s.
Result: 9,103 votes (of 2.68 million votes cast). Not elected.
Iyeth Bustami (Sri Barat)
Party: National Awakening Party (PKB)
Constituency: Riau District I (Bengkalis, Rokan Hulu, Rokan Hilir, Siak and Kepulauan Meranti regencies, Pekanbaru and Dumai cities). Seeking DPR seat.
Born: 24 August 1974 (39 on election day).
Occupation: Dangdut and pop singer.
Result: 45,803 votes (of 1,672,114 votes cast). The most votes of any PKB candidate for the constituency, but not enough to beat candidates of six other parties. Not elected.
Marissa Haque
Party: National Mandate Party PAN
Constituency: Bengkulu.
Born: 15 October 1962 (51 on election day).
Occupation: Former actress. Was a legislator with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) from 2004 until expelled in 2006 for becoming the running mate of Banten governor candidate Zulkieflimansyah of Party Syarikat Islam. In 2007 she joined PPP. In 2012 she joined PAN.
Result: 23,157 votes (of 1,106,368 votes cast). Not elected.
Desy Ratnasari
Party: National Mandate Party (PAN)
Constituency: West Java District IV (Sukabumi city and regency).
Born: 12 December 1973 (40 on election day).
Occupation: Actress, singer and model. Famous for her alleged former relationship with Soeharto-era manpower minister and real estate mogul Abdul Latief.
Result: 56,397 votes (of 1,432,599 votes cast). Elected.
Jane Shalimar
Party: National Democratic Party (NasDem)
Constituency: Jakarta District III (North Jakarta).
Born: 20 June 1980 (33 on election day).
Occupation: Actress and presenter.
Result: 2,663 votes (of 1,883,671 votes cast). Not elected.
Indri Yuli Hartati
Party: Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI)
Constituency: Central Java X (Pemalang, Pekalongan and Batang regencies, Pekalongan city).
Born: 1 July 1979 (34 on election day).
Occupation: Real estate agent and property developer. While many legislative candidates try to buy support by handing out food, t-shirts and money, Indri gives bras to women voters. She claims to have handed out 10,000 bras. Has also handed out underpants. Opposes polygamy.
Result: 263 votes (of 1,852,198 votes cast). Not elected.
Nonny Chirilda

Occupation: Model. Founded a modelling school. German husband.

Melly Manuhutu
Party: National Democratic Party (NasDem)

Occupation: Pop singer, model, actress.
Result: 15,461 votes (of 1,669,449 votes cast). The most votes of any NasDem candidate for the constituency but insufficient to beat candidates of seven other parties. Not elected.
Liza Natalia Sari

Occupation: Dangdut singer and zumba/fitness advocate. Wants Indonesians to become healthier, like her, by avoiding over-indulgence in rice and fried foods.

Devy Permata Sary (Devi Permatasari)

Constituency: South Sumatra I (Banyuasin, Musi Banyu Asin and Musi Rawas regencies, Lubuk Linggau and Palembang cities).

Occupation: Soap opera actress, model and presenter.

Dina Wahyuningrum

Rieke Diah Pitaloka

Constituency: West Java District III (Cianjur regency and Bogor city). Served in the DPR for PDIP for 2009-2014. Seeking re-election.

Occupation: Author, TV star, human rights activist and a genuine politician. In 2012, she contested the West Java gubernatorial election with anti-corruption figurehead Teten Masduki as her running mate. They narrowly lost in a disputed result.

Okky Asokawati

Occupation: Former model, actress, presenter and fashion designer, she became a politician in 2009.
Result: 35,727 votes (of 2,002,301 votes cast). Elected.
Meutya Hafid
Party: Golkar
Constituency: North Sumatra District I (Medan, Deli Serdang, Serdang Bedagai and Tebing Tinggi).
Born: 3 May 1978 (35 on election day).
Occupation: Former Metro TV presenter. In February 2005 she and a cameraman were kidnapped in Iraq and held hostage for a week. She later wrote a book about the ordeal. In 2010, Meutya contested the mayoral election in Binjai city in North Sumatra. She and her running mate Dhani Setiawan Isma were supported by Golkar, the Democratic Party, Hanura, PAN and other parties. They narrowly lost the election and claimed they were the victims of fraud, spoiled ballots and other irregularities. The Constitutional Court, which has a track record of awarding disputed election results to the highest bidders, rejected her demand for a recount. In August 2010, Meutya was appointed to the House of Representatives, replacing deceased Golkar legislator Burhanuddin Napitupulu. Despite being a former Metro TV presenter, she declined to join the Nasdem Party of Metro TV boss Surya Paloh.

Lola Bandah

Constituency: West Java Local District X (Cirebon and Indramayu). Seeking seat in the West Java House of Representatives (DPRD).

Occupation: Dangdut singer. Achieved fame on a TV talent show.
Result: Not elected. PKPI won only 7,132 of 874,265 votes cast for the West Java DPRD.
Nova Riyanti Yusuf (NoRiYu)

Pusriva Wahid (Eva)

Occupation: Housewife, whose husband works as a contractor in Kalimantan. Gained prominence after a photo was circulated online, showing her appearing to smoke shabu-shabu (crystal methamphetamine) through a straw. Hanura did not fire her but instead encouraged her to report the matter to police. She claimed the person who took the photo tried to blackmail her for Rp 25 million. Eva denied she was smoking drugs, claiming the photo was engineered and she had merely been sipping an energy drink through a straw.
